Is H1 Too Concerned With Overseas Racing?

yourvoiceIn several recent interviews H1 Chairman Sam Cole has stated that H1 is looking to expand overseas.  Just this morning on Facebook Cole said, "Nothing to report on San Diego. No one understands how these things work and how difficult they are. Great news coming from China. Takes a lot of time but could be there in February 2011. Much to do to make it happen. Everyone is getting into the Doha mode- more news on that one coming. Seattle was a great race- lets look forward to more action soon."

With the loss of San Diego a few years ago and most recently the loss of Evansville's Thunder on the Ohio, which had been on the schedule for 31 straight years, along with last minute efforts to save the sports two most historic races (Detroit's Gold Cup and Seattle's Seafair), should the sport of unlimited hydroplane racing look to save and promote racing here in North America or is the future overseas?

Go3racing would like to know what you think.  Please take time to vote in our poll on the right side of the page.

Sport Weathering Recession, Plans to Expand in Future

SatLon1By Jim Riley
Special to the Seattle Times

Sam Cole, chairman of U1 Unlimited, feels good about the future of the sport of unlimited hydroplane racing despite the fact there were only four races in the United States this year and one in Qatar that will run Nov. 18-20.

"We have been weathering the recession like the rest of America," Cole said. "I feel very positive about where we're headed. I can see us racing on two or three continents in the next couple of years."

Cole said financial troubles that nearly canceled races in both Seattle and Detroit hurt efforts to expand into new markets or returning to sites that have held races in the past.

San Diego Race This Season?

bayfair_bar_09Will the 2010 H1 Unlimited season see a 6th race added to the schedule?

In a post race interview from Seattle with Brad Luce on WORX Radio, Miss Madison Owner's Representative Bob Hughes mentioned "that they will know" in a few weeks about San Diego. He didn't elaborate further about a return to Mission Bay this year, but the comment came within the context of the last race of the season being in Doha, Qatar (November 19-20, 2010).

The tour didn't visit San Diego in 2009, and aren't currently on the schedule for this racing season. But, H1 officials and San Diego Bayfair Chairman Jeff Thomas have had negotiations in the past about a return of the Unlimiteds to the schedule.

The San Diego Bayfair event is scheduled for September 17-19, 2010.

Stay tuned.

H1 Chairman News
H1 Unlimited LogoOn Saturday afternoon during a break in the action at the Albert Lee Cup at Seafair, H1 Unlimited Chairman Sam Cole answered a few questions from fans via a chat "Cover-it-Live". It's been a while since we've heard from the H1 leadership on a variety of topics. Here's a few things that were discussed:

Racing in China
"We were given approval from the Chinese Sport Ministry to proceed with one or two events. This is new news this week, which took 11 months to negotiate."

More events for the Middle East
"We are aggressively seeking at least one more race there in 2011. Location still open."

 Racing in Brazil
"Unfortunately the sponsorship did not come together at this time. What really comes into play with international racing is travel. Planning is critical."

Fighting for Lanes
"Fighting for lanes should be back next year. All registered owners are supportive."

Future of Evansville
"We will do anything we can to return to Evansville. Need a strong committee and community support."
