Fast Field Ready for Air National Guard Series' Opener in Madison
Dave Villwock Pursuing Record-Setting Win

Madison, IN, June 23, 2011—Driver Dave Villwock is looking to become the sport’s all-time winningest driver as the Air National Guard Series starts its 2011 season at the 61st annual Madison Regatta in Madison, Indiana over the Fourth of July weekend.

But to get the record, Villwock will have to overcome the most competitive fields in decades. Twelve boats are expected to take to the Ohio River as hometown favorite Oh Boy! Oberto, owned by the city of Madison and driven by Steve David, is aiming to win its fourth-consecutive high points national championship. But standing in the way of both drivers are a number teams with either new or significantly improved equipment.

Villwock has amassed 62 race wins during his illustrious unlimited hydroplane career, tying all-time leader Bill Muncey. Muncey’s record has stood for 30 years and was matched last year by Villwock when he won the Oryx Cup in Doha, Qatar.

New Role for Jimmy King
Monday, 13 June 2011 15:36

bobby kingGo3 Racing driver Jimmy King is used to sitting in the cockpit of the Big Red Turbinator. He is serving in a different capacity this summer. Instead of driver King, he is crew King. His 17 year old son Bobby is in his 2nd year of driving in a hydroplane. Jimmy is crewing for his son's S-242 Crush hydro in the 2.5 liter stock class.

Bobby competed this past weekend (June 11-12) at the Walled Lake, MI race. It was a great weekend for Team King.  Bobby got his first ever heat win, placed 3rd in the final heat and a 2nd place trophy overall for the weekend. He's definitely following in the footsteps of his Dad!

In the picture, you can see Jimmy on the right side of the hull, in the water, as Bobby prepares to go racing.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

H1 Unlimited Announces Broadcast Team for Versus Network TV Shows

weberNBC Sports motorsports announcer Bill Weber to be joined by driver Mike Allen

Pasco, WA, June 9, 2011—NBC Sports lead motorsports announcer Bill Weber and former H1 Unlimited driver Mike Allen will serve as the broadcast team for the Air National Guard Hydroplane Series television shows that will appear on the Versus Network this fall.

For the past decade, Weber has covered everything from NASCAR events to IndyCar racing for NBC Sports and is considered one of the premier motorsports announcers.

Weber has a deep knowledge of unlimited hydroplane racing, covering the sport as a local sports anchor in Indiana and serving as a public relations consultant for one of the sport’s biggest teams and drivers during the 1980s.

"This is a homecoming for me," said Weber, who lives in Florida. "I started out covering hydroplane racing and traveling to races because it was so popular. I want people to understand how fun and exciting this sport is."

Joining Weber in the booth is broadcast newcomer Mike Allen, who will provide color commentary that only a fellow driver and competitor can deliver. In 2006 Allen became the first rookie driver to lead his team to the National High Points Championship, which earned him Rookie of the Year honors. He has been in boat racing nearly 25 years, more recently in the limited classes.mikeallen

"I want to take the viewer into what it’s like being in the cockpit," said the New Orleans resident. "There is so much going on inside the boat during a race that viewers probably don’t know or might not understand it."

Summer Update
Friday, 03 June 2011 17:44

engine2This time last summer, the Go3 Racing shop was buzzing with activity. The pace is slower a year later, but work goes on none the less. Owner Ed Cooper is in the shop daily working to improve his engine program. Since the team is on temporary hiatus from competative racing, other crew members trickle in as needed to help complete work for the team. The team does stay intact.

Since last July, there have been enough parts and pieces gathered to assemble seven (7) brand new and never run Allison V-12 engines. Three are currently complete. The others are waiting to be careful put together by Ed Cooper. The work is tedius and very exacting to make an Allison engine run. engine 1

Never in his 25 years as an Unlimited owner has Ed Cooper ever had seven completely assembled and race ready engines. The time away from racing has given us a nice break to complete, test and try new things with the Allisons. A side note: it takes about 2 years to totally finish building a competative engine. If you add up the time collecting the various Allison parts, sending some off for additional work, and assmbley, it totals almost 2 years to complete one engine. Pretty amazing. The Bid Red Turbinator can't wait to get her new bullets and make them purr!
