Air National Guard H1 Series Sponsor
Monday, 11 April 2011 11:25

ang logo 11It was officially announced this morning that the Air National Guard will sponsor the H1 Unlimited series in 2011.

It will be called the Air National Guard Hydroplane series.

Word leaked in February at the H1 meetings in Las Vegas that the ANG would partner with H1 as title sponsor. Details were finalized last week. The ANG will be the first series title sponsor the ABRA/ H1 Unlimited has had since the inception of the organization in 2005.

Along with the announcement of a title sponsor, and also no surprise, is that Versus TV will televise all 7 races in 2011. Each race will be shown 2 weeks after the event, during the prime afternoon hours on a weekend. Live streaming will be available each race weekend as well. Tampa Digital will return as the production company for the streaming, as well as the television broadcasts on Versus.

Five races in the United States are set, and the season ender in Doha, Qatar makes 6 races. When asked in Monday morning's H1 teleconference, Chairman Sam Cole could not announce the site of the 7th race for 2011. He stated that "3 to 4 race sites are still in the running" and that several have been eliminated from contention. He said, "We'll announce something when we have the details."

We do know that Evansville has been a part of these negotiations since the first of the year as the 7th race site this summer. At this time, we do not know if Evansville is on the latest cut list. We are still working to get all those details to see if we'll have Thunder on the Ohio in 2011. The 6th U.S. race is important to the ANG and H1. The ANG officials have several "target" areas they want to see as races sites and the H1 folks are working to fulfill those areas.

It only makes sense, at this point, to have Evansville return to the circuit. From what we understand, no other potential race site has all the logistics already in place to put on an Unlimited event in a short period of time. The Thunder officials have all that in place already.

robert bowles1Being from Seattle, Robert Bowles had a love of hydroplane racing. He passed that love of racing on to his son. Rick Bowles is a boat builder and a huge part of the success of the Go3 Racing Team.

Robert Bowles passed away this week at the age of 79.

Rick tells us, "My Dad was an avid hydroplane fan. He started me out watching the hydroplane races in Seattle when I was just 5 years old and was always willing to do anything to help me do what I loved--Hydroplane Racing!! He was just a great guy who loved being in the pits and visiting with anyone who would visit back."

Robert was in charge of security of the Big Red Turbinator while the team raced in San Diego for around 10 years.

Along with Rick, Robert had two daughters, 2 step daughters, 9 grand children and 6 great grand children. Moving to Las Vegas in 1992, Robert worked in the food brokerage business.

The entire Go3 Racing Team has Rick and his family in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace, Mr. Bowles. You will be missed!

joshculverGrowing up watching the Unlimited hydroplane races every summer in Pasco, Washington, Go3 crew member Josh Culver had a dream. He began to fulfill that dream last weekend as he tested his newly purchased 1 litre modified hydroplane on the Columbia River. The 20 year old helps Ed Cooper on the Big Red Turbinator during the west coast swing on the H1 series.

The initial testing saw a few problems with the carburetor, so the team won't make the first race of the season in Yelm, WA. this weekend (April 8-10). Josh Culver hopes to make his debut as a hydroplane driver on April 30 at Moses Lake, WA.

Watch out Jimmy King. Josh is hoping to take your place in Big Red soon!

KNDU-TV did a story on the first test run. See the story here.

Just how much less of the Wild  Bill Cantrell Memorial course will we see this year? The Madison Courier's David Campbell reports from Wednesday's Madison Regatta meeting. Click on this link to read the entire story.
